Ask Sallie: Is the Gender Pay Gap a Confidence Issue? (Video)

By Sallie Krawcheck

The gender pay gap is very much still a thing, despite companies’ efforts (or, in many cases, “efforts”) to close it. The way things stand now, it will take over 40 years, on average, until women are paid equally to men, and hundreds of years for Black women and Latinas.

Today, Sallie answers a frustrating but common question: Is the gender pay gap a confidence issue?

Sallie’s answer:

No, no, no, it's not. Of course it’s not. It’s a systemic issue.

Society tends to tell us women things about ourselves that simply aren’t true — that feel sort of true, but aren’t true. One that we particularly fight here at Ellevest is that women are risk averse.

But another that’s been going around is that women have a confidence issue. Dig deeper into that research? And it’s been done on teenage girls. And so, what we are actually saying is that teenage girls have a confidence issue.

When there’s a difference in confidence between men and women in the workplace, it’s been shown that the women’s confidence is pretty right on. The guys tend to be a little — dare I say — overconfident.

So it is not a confidence issue. In fact, women are asking for those raises, and they’re just not always getting them. So stop blaming the women.
