At the beginning of 2019, Ellevest launched a Refer a Friend* program. Nutshell: If you’re an Ellevest client, when a friend you refer also starts investing with us, we’ll give you $20 to invest toward your own future … and your friend gets $20 to invest, too.**
We did it because we know that when women are stronger financially, everyone wins. And since we launched, it’s made our hearts happy to see so many people out there spreading the word about financial feminism. Getting started investing — often for the first time. And breaking all those taboos around talking about money.
So we made you a present of our best tips and tactics to keep those conversations going and those referrals flowing.
1. Use your magic referral link
ICYMI, if you’re an Ellevest client, you now have a referral link you can share. You can find it by clicking the INVITE button at the top right of your Ellevest dashboard. (If you haven’t referred anyone yet, btw, you’ll be prompted to accept a “solicitor agreement” so you can get your bonus. You can read that here.)
Where sharing the link helps lift women up:
Private networking groups (and if you aren’t in one yet, here’s why we think you should be)
Your work or community Slack channel
Group chats with your friends
Email: You can choose to send individual email invites through your dashboard, or you can email them your link
Facebook, Pinterest, and LinkedIn (your link will pull the image below)
Instagram — feel free to copy the images below to share in feeds and stories. If you want to see who’s clicking, use a free link shortener (think Bitly) to create a trackable short link for your bio.
2. Start a conversation first
“WTF is Ellevest? A model in a vest?” Maybe you said that too, once upon a time. Makes total sense to share some context, right?
Starting a conversation about the issues around women and money first helps people understand why you’re on this journey and why you want them to come with you. Then, once you’ve done that, ask the group if people are interested in getting a referral (and that $20 bonus), then offer your referral link if they are.

3. Some more scripts you can use
So we have to tell you this: When you refer people to Ellevest, you actually aren’t allowed to say a couple of key things:
How your investments performed, good or bad
Your experience as an Ellevest client
Weird. We know. Here’s why.
As a fiduciary, we’re obligated by law to put our clients and their interests first. And that means … rules. For example, our investment advisor rules say we can’t include client testimonials in advertisements, since one person’s experience with Ellevest doesn’t guarantee another person’s will be the same. So, as a referrer or someone who’s getting financially compensated (that’s the $20 per friend part), you can’t give “testimonials” about our investing services, either.
Yeah. A little weird — but for a really pure reason.
Some ideas for things you can say (feel free to steal):
When women are stronger financially, we all win. You know it, I know it. Ellevest is investing by women, for women. Kind of important. So when you use my link to sign up, you’ll get $20 to start investing! (Love that.)
There’s no minimum to get started investing with Ellevest Digital, because they want every woman to be able to start building her financial future. When you use my link to sign up, you’ll get $20 to get started, and I even get a $20 bonus, too. They are seriously putting money behind their mission. You in?
Ellevest taught me that women face more than just wage gaps. Men invest more and retire with more, and women have more debt and do all that unpaid labor, too. So they made it their mission to help women become “financial feminists” and close those gaps. When you use my link to sign up, you’ll get $20 to get started investing, because sisterhood. (And if you want to know more about those money gaps, check out Ellevest.com.)
Some examples of things that don’t quite work:
Just not in the community spirit:
Here’s how to make $20 fast! Use my link to join Ellevest and they’ll give you $20.
Sounds great but can’t make it work (it’s a testimonial):
I’m a client of Ellevest and they’re such great company to invest with. Use my link to get started and we’ll each get $20!
Lol, no (your investments’ past performance is no guarantee of future success):
The women at Ellevest are such geniuses with money! Sign up and we’ll each get $20 and you’ll start making $$$!
4. How to keep track of everything
Check out your dashboard to see who’s taken action through your invitations and your link so far. That way, you’re not reminding anyone who’s already in progress.
If someone’s created an account but hasn’t made a deposit yet, you’ll see an email address and the word “Resend” next to it to send the email invite. If you’d like to remind them to keep going, you can either send the invitation from the dashboard, or just reach out personally.
If your friend has made a deposit but the transaction hasn’t completed yet, you’ll see the word “Pending.”
You’ll see “$20” next to anyone who’s successfully started investing from your invitation.**
5. Become an Elle Raisers Ambassador and share that good stuff, too!
If you’re not an Elle Raisers Ambassador yet, you just need to successfully refer two people and the title’s yours. Elle Raisers Ambassadors are the leaders of the Elle Raiser community, and they get special access to cool stuff, like exclusive Q&As, and some gorgeous treats, like Ellevest swag. Feel free to share that, too:
Unboxing video of your swag? Yes, please.
Photos of you toting Ellevest gear? Of course. You look amazing.
Sharing what you learned in a webinar or private Q&A? Sure!
Talking about why the Elle Raiser community and Ellevest Refer a Friend program exist? Love, love, love.
So if you haven’t started yet, you now have all the tools you need to get going. Go forth, friends, and start lifting people up.
