The Next Financial Area We’ve Reimagined for Women

By Sallie Krawcheck

You likely know the bad news: Over the past year, the economic and political conditions for women have worsened globally. And not by a little: The World Economic Forum’s annual report says the pandemic has set women’s equality back by a generation. The timeline to equality now stands at 135.6 years.

So at this rate, we women will achieve equality in 2156. So, not for our generation’s daughters, not for our granddaughters, not for our great-granddaughters — but for our great-great-granddaughters.

Ugh. No.

Not all of this is out of our hands; helping women achieve greater financial strength, more quickly, with actions you can take yourself, is what we’re all about at Ellevest.

We started with investing — because it’s been a key driver of generational wealth, and women haven’t invested nearly as much as men have. We worked to make it more inclusive: no minimum,* low fees, easy to use, and the only investing algorithm that doesn’t ignore the plain fact that women and non-binary people aren’t men (women live longer, take more career breaks, and earn less).

But that’s only the first step.

Another big area we’ve wanted to make much more inclusive, to help women earn more: career and money coaching.

First of all, who doesn’t need a coach in their corner? Michael Jordan had a coach. Steve Jobs had a coach. Venus and Serena Williams have coaches. But career and money coaching have been maybe even more inaccessible than investing was — how do you find a coach, how do you know if they’re any good … should they cost an arm and a leg? Or even just a leg? What can they help with?

Plus, when I’ve had executive coaches before, they’ve mostly looked like the industry they operated in (older, white men), and so we sometimes talked right past each other, with their advising me to act more aggressively than I knew would fly.

Enter: Money and career coaching for everyone.

Just as we worked at Ellevest to make investing more inclusive — by making it both less expensive and more “built with us in mind” — we’ve also rolled out money and career coaching that’s more inclusive — by making it less expensive and having coaches who reflect our community … and who can thus better understand what we deal with in the workplace.

You can dive in and start learning whenever you want.

  • Workshops, courses, and more for everyone: Want to know how to make a budget or pay off debt? How investing works? How to negotiate a raise? Sign up to do more for your money and career.

  • Open to everyone, with discounts for Ellevest members: Schedule a career coaching session. There’s really no substitute for one-on-one coaching. It’s a game-changer. So we priced our coaching sessions with member discounts so that they’re more likely to be actually affordable.

Achieving greater financial strength. Together.

Even before the pandemic set women back 135.6 years, too many women were stuck in relationships, jobs, or lives that haven’t worked for them, because they didn’t have the financial resources to enable them to make a change. Because the money industries — Wall Street, the investing industry, venture capital — haven’t worked for them.

And that’s why we’re here to help you reach your money goals. Money is different for women+. Money is different for BIPOC people. That’s baked into everything we do.

We created Ellevest because we believe there’s strength in numbers. We believe nothing bad happens when women have more money. So we built in ways to make investing and career coaching more accessible. We hope you’ll find what you need to achieve greater financial strength and what works for you.
