Ask Sallie: When Do I Ask for the Raise? (Video)

By Sallie Krawcheck

Sallie’s answer:

Yesterday! “Yesterday” is the answer, or at least “from the beginning.” You would be negotiating your compensation and your perks from the very first job. Most employers don't give you their best offer right away … unless you're going into a business with a big class of new employees. But if it's a one-off job offer, they're not giving you their best offer right away.

Every year, you should be having the raise conversation with your boss. What does it take to be successful? What are the metrics I'm being measured against? If I make these metrics, what kind of career progression and raise should I be expecting?

At what point should I ask for a raise? Yesterday.
